Your Complete Guide to Fostering a Dog with Big Dogs Don't Cry

Fostering a dog saves lives — not just the dog you take in, but also the next dog who can now be pulled from a shelter because you made space. At Big Dogs Don't Cry, our entire rescue model is built on the generosity of foster families across Northwest Indiana. If you've ever considered fostering but felt unsure or overwhelmed, this guide is for you.

What Does Fostering Actually Mean?

Fostering means temporarily housing a rescue dog in your home while we work to find them a permanent family. Foster periods can range from one week to several months depending on the dog's needs. You provide the love, the safe space, and the daily care. We provide food, veterinary care, supplies, and full support every step of the way.

Who Can Foster?

Almost anyone can foster! Whether you rent or own, have a yard or not, have kids or don't — we work to match each dog to the right foster home. You do not need prior rescue experience. We've had retirees, young professionals, families with toddlers, and single pet owners all become incredible foster caregivers. The main requirement is a willing heart and a safe environment.

Does Fostering Cost Money?

No. Big Dogs Don't Cry covers all veterinary expenses, including routine wellness visits, vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, and emergency care. We also provide food and basic supplies. Your job is to open your home and your heart — that's it. If you'd like to contribute extras like special treats or a cozy bed, that's always appreciated but never required.

What If I Get Too Attached?

This is the most common question we hear, and it's a fair one. Getting attached is actually a sign you're doing it right — it means you're giving that dog exactly what they needed. Many foster families do eventually adopt their foster dog (we lovingly call this a “foster fail”, though we prefer to see it as a foster win). And if you place your dog with another family, knowing you were the bridge between their past and their forever home is a feeling unlike any other.

How Do I Get Started?

Getting started is easy. Simply visit bigdogsdontcry.com and fill out our Foster Application. Our team reviews every application personally and will reach out to discuss which dogs might be a great fit for your home and lifestyle. From there, we coordinate pickup or transport and are available by phone and message throughout your entire foster journey.

Ready to Save a Life?

Every dog currently in a shelter or rescue situation is waiting for a temporary home that could change their life. By fostering, you are directly responsible for saving that animal. If you have questions before applying, reach out to us at Bigdogsdontcryrescue@gmail.com or call 219-841-1142. We would love to welcome you to the BDDC foster family.
